大革命时期，知识青年靳恭绶（于洋 饰）、顾达明（简瑞超 饰）、杨如宽（杜熊文 饰）、余宏奎（刘冠雄 饰）因为各自不同的原因离乡相遇，在济南结为拜把兄弟。不久，由于出身信仰的不同，各自走上了不同的道路，期间他们还结识了谢辉（王蓓 饰）和刘芬（吴慧明 饰）两位女学生。北伐的胜利召唤他们来到武昌，靳恭绶等人考入中央军校，师从共产党员赵锦章（史进 饰），余宏奎则投奔了国民党参谋薛建白（林岚 饰）。四一二反革命政变后，国共分裂，蒋介石大肆捕杀共产党人，“马日事变”暴发后，已经加入共产党的靳恭绶和顾达明闯入敌营救出身受重伤的赵老师，并遵从赵的遗训回武汉找党，而余宏奎则在大革命的风囗浪尖上彻底投降了敌人......
